Garage Day: Stance Wars Prep
April 3, 2017

A few months ago, quite a few of us from Garage 710 decided to start preparing our cars for Stance Wars Las Vegas. With some of the group having attended last year, we were excited to get a bigger group out there. However our various projects became hung up at different stages, and things didn’t go quite according to plan. With the fleet reduced to only a few cars ready to make the long trip, we made the best of the situation and got them looking their best.

For many of us, each of these cars sees daily use and abuse. Between weather, and busy schedules, sometimes the cars look as if they are fresh out of a rally stage. The idea was simple, with the help of our resident detailing genius, Nick Hammon, we would get the cars ready for the long trip to Stance Wars. Nick has been responsible for saving the paint on many of our cars, sometimes from points where most other people would have simply repainted the car. This time around he wanted to knock out intensive detailing in one go, so the group assembled at the garage late on Saturday afternoon.

The process was largely the same for each car. Each one was foamed thoroughly, and all road grime was completely removed. From there Nick would dry it off, and roll it into the garage. This is where the real work would begin.

Every piece of easily scuffed rubber, and all fragile trim pieces were taped off, or otherwise removed. From there he would go over the car with a clay bar, carefully removing months of embedded dirt from each daily driver. Once he was satisfied, he would buff each car for hours at a time. The cars received multiple passes, each time with a finer compound to bring out a little more color.

From there each car was sealed, trim pieces were shined, and wheels were given the final touches. Nick was mindful to prepare each car for the long road trip ahead, and made sure to make it much easier to clean the car again, once we were out of town. Unsurprisingly, each one rolled out of the garage looking completely renewed.

We typically spend our Saturdays working in the garage. Sometimes we’re just keeping up with regular maintenance, and other times we are working through the night to prepare for a road trip and car show. With only the one weekend to prepare, Nick worked tirelessly for nearly 24 hours. The difference in each car was staggering, and as a group the cars were ready to travel to Las Vegas for Stance Wars.

Stay tuned for our coverage on the Stance Wars show itself, as well as a couple of awesome features we did while we were out there. They will all be out later this month!
